I went to a one-day workshop in Hamilton, which was run by Rauhina Cooper at the University of Waikato. There was a lot to take in today. Rauhina covered an array of second language teaching strategies for teaching grammar and vocabulary in fun and engaging ways. I kapi katoa i a Rauhina ngā rautaki maha te whakamārama me te whakamātau i te whā hāora – wehi nā! I really loved all of the strategies, but my favourites were the charades game and Rory’s cubes. Although the latter would work with ākonga who have a good command of the reo, I can see it really helping to enhance the communicative skills (i.e., kōrero) of my ākonga.
Often times I go to these workshops and I find them too advanced to use with my ākonga, who are mostly new learners of te reo Māori. However, Rauhina spoke a lot more about second language acquisition for ākonga in English medium schools, which was awesome! Her vocabulary teaching rauemi and strategies are easy to create and incorporate into my practice and look super fun. I am very keen to try the grammar teaching stuff. Although all of these strategies follow the traditional method of teaching – which is to present, practise and produce (PPP) – they will compliment and add some fun to the mahi that I am already doing.
There were seven strategies introduced for teaching vocabulary including:
- Tukuna, Ākongia, Ūnga (TAU) | Input, Recognition, Discrimination, Production and Extension (IRDPX by Jim Madden)
- Arawhata Arepa | Alpha Ladder
- Kāri Rarapa | Flash Cards
- Te Kimi Tikanga i te Horopaki | Guessing from Context
- Panga Kupu | Puzzles
- Kāri Rūpi | Loopy Cards
- Tīpare | Headbands
Grammar teaching strategies included whakarongo, pānui, tuhituhi, and kōrero tasks:
- Whakarongo me te tuhi (hei mahi whakarongo me te tuhituhi)
- He kupu kāore i te Hiahiatia | Unwanted Words (hei mahi pānui)
- Tūhonoa ētahi rerenga e rua (hei mahi tuhituhi)
- Te Kōrero Paki | Rory’s Cubes (hei mahi kōrero)
