Ōhinerangi Rauemi Reo Māori

I recently purchased a rauemi I saw advertised on Buy Māori on Facebook. Below are some of my thoughts and uses of this amazing rauemi.

My Year 11 students have been working on different rerenga, including reremahi, rerewā, and rerewāhi. I have been using this rauemi to reinforce and revise the above rerenga (sentences).

Reremahi + Extension Pack (small) with magnets

Ngā Momo Kāri

The kāri are colour coded, which I love!

  • Purple (with black writing) – rerewā or time phrases
  • Purple (with white writing) – reo raupapa or sequencing phrases
  • Yellow tūwāhi or locations (not place names)
  • Orange (with animals) – tūingoa or nouns
  • Orange (with people) – tūpou or pronouns
  • Red (with images) – tūmahi or verbs
  • Green (double arrow) – tūhonohono or conjunctions
  • Blue whakakāhore or negating sentences
  • Red (no images) – tohu wā or tense marker
  • Yellow (single arrow) – particle ‘ki’
  • Light blue (circle) – particle ‘i’

Use of rauemi in my akomanga

  1. Placed the kāri on the whiteboard
  2. Ākonga are put into groups of 3-4
  3. Each rōpū co-create a paragraph using all the different word and phrase types
  4. Ākonga rotate and peer mark the mahi of the sentences/paragraphs of another rōpū
  5. Return to their own paragraph
  6. Write the paragraph in their pukapuka

Notes: created their own cards for some kupu

He Arotake

What do I love about this rauemi?

  • Colour coded – easily identifiable words and phrases
  • Fun and engaging (my students loved it!)
  • Suitable for all year levels
  • Helps with student’s pūkenga tuhituhi
  • Good for accuracy and wete reo – breaks down each kupu type and their purpose in the sentence
  • Can use them to co-construct a paragraph as a class
  • Can use for independent writing practice

What are some things that can make it even better?

  • Have more particle words ‘i’ and ‘ki’ in the pack
  • Add some kupu whānau, e.g. koro, kuia, māmā, pāpā, etc.
  • Add pūmuri and pūmua, e.g. mai, atu, tonu, ake, iho, tino, rawa
  • Have all the whakakāhore for the tense marker ‘I te’ (Kāore….i te…)
  • Add the word ‘ko’ to join names
