Progressive Education for Kaiako Māori|MAPPS Digital

Rachel Tūwhāngai – Director of MAPPS Digital

19-20 April, 2021|Auckland War Memorial Museum

The primary focus of this workshop with Rachel Tūwhāngai (Director of MAPPS Digital) was to look at some theory and pedagogy that were on her Top 3 list of progressive education pedagogies for kaiako Māori to consider in their teaching practice. Her list includes: inquiry-based learning, project-based learning, place-based learning and how they can all be be used to design an integrated curriculum. All of these pedagogies are perfect for developing a ‘local integrated curriculum.’

Day 1 we focused on:

  • key Māori exhibitions with tour guides
  • pedagogy: inquiry learning, project-based learning and progressive education
  • meet the Learning Manager of the Museum (Dion Peita) and the services they offer to kura

Day 2 we focused on:

  • planning in teams
  • cross-curricular unit planning with other kaiako in attendance
  • integrated assessments, where students can complete one project and gain multiple credits
  • a visit to the research library
